Genuine Parts Central to Transport Efficiency and Profitability

UD Trucks Southern Africa is continuing its drive to offer its customers the lowest lifecycle costs in the industry. Key to this is the timely and effective supply of UD Trucks Genuine Parts to limit downtime on trucks, and to limit unnecessary breakdowns or failures.
According to Gert Ebersohn, general manager of UD Trucks South Africa’s after market operations, the question is often posed why one should go to the trouble of buying genuine manufacturer parts, as it is often seen as being more expensive.
“The fact is that UD Trucks spends years of research, development and engineering to perfect each part that is utilised on its trucks. At first glance, pirated parts might appear very similar to its genuine counterpart, but it is those things not detected with the naked eye that often cause severe part failures.”
Ebersohn pointed out that when you buy a UD Trucks vehicle, the quality is inherent in every part and component, as the company continuously ensures that the complete vehicle adheres to stringent quality measures. Each time a ‘pirated’ or inferior part is added, the overall quality of the truck is diminished.
When UD Trucks develops a part, it is not just a specific component that is tested and optimised; the company also ensures that it won’t have a negative effect on the life and quality of adjoining parts.
Vic Capitani, general manager of engineering at UD Trucks South Africa, explains that, for instance, when the company develops a starter motor, engineers will ensure that the amount of power that the unit draws from the truck’s electronic system, doesn’t cause any stress on surrounding components.
“A truck is not a single entity and therefore the failure of one component could be caused by an inferior part in its vicinity,” said Capitani. “UD Trucks has very stringent test standards to ensure that our customers have the best quality truck, made up of various equally good quality components.”
UD Trucks believes that they have come a long way in addressing the core issues when it comes to parts supply, including price.
“As part of our ongoing drive to provide a better product and service to customers, we have set the benchmark in the industry and have a leading parts supply rate,” said Ebersohn.
To ensure industry leading fulfilment rates, UD Trucks stock more than R80 million worth of active parts and undertakes to deliver parts within 48-hours of receiving an order for a VOR (Vehicle of Road). Normal supply to dealers on stock orders is five days.
Ebersohn also pointed out that customers, who follow the service schedule determined by their dealers and use genuine parts on their trucks, often reach over a million kilometres with their units before any major repair is required.
“Buying a truck is a big investment and for this reason, you need a transport partner that is as serious about your business as you are,” said Ebersohn. “At UD Trucks we understand all the complexities involved in today’s transport industry, and we therefore are able to offer customers complete solutions, no matter the size of their business.”
