Arrow Karts Reckons New UD Is Spot On Target

Australia's biggest manufacturer of racing karts has purchased a new UD PK10 to act as a mobile race workshop and transporter for its official race and development teams.

Drew Price Engineering, manufacturer of Arrow racing karts manufactures up to 2000 race karts a year at its facility at Clayton in Melbourne's southeast, and purchased the new PK10 to replace its previous UD MK, which it had outgrown.

According to DPE's manager of development and racing Darren Hossack, the company's experience with the previous UD ensured it would replace the original truck with a new UD.

"The only reason we replaced the old UD was because we had outgrown it and we needed a higher grossing truck," said Darren Hossack.

"The MK was a bloody good truck and we had it on the road for the past five years, however with all our karts, spares and tools on board it was just a little too small for our needs these days," he said.

"We have a purpose built body that houses all our race karts and spares as well as providing us with a race workshop when we are at the track racing or testing, fortunately by sticking with UD we could just swap our body across to the new truck," he added.

The Arrow kart team venture interstate at least seven times a year, travelling as far afield a Townsville and Perth for various championship kart racing meetings.

As race team and development manager Darren Hossack gets the task of driving the UD and says the ease of operation and comfort make the UD s a pleasure to drive.

"I am no truckie, I drive race cars when I am not running the kart team, but with cruise control, air bag suspension on the PK10 and its suspended cab and seat it is incredibly easy and comfortable to drive, it is more like driving a car really," said Darren.

Arrow Kart's UD is equipped with a hydraulic lift tailgate as well as featuring a complete mobile workshop including compressor, generator, full 240 volt wiring and lighting, a six by three metre electric awning on the side of the body, along with workbenches and professional PAC cabinets inside.

The truck usually carries up to six karts along with an array of spares including 90 rear axles, 25 spare engines and an array of spare kart tyres amongst other things for the team's two lead drivers David Sera and Bart Price.

David Sera and the Arrow team won 10 national titles in 2009 making it not only the biggest kart manufacturer in Australia, but also the most successful.

The company was started 35 years ago by founder and well-known racer Drew Price, and today exports all around the world including to Europe, Japan, the USA and Asia.

"Our success as a manufacturer of race karts is really linked to our success on the track and a part of that is staying ahead of the opposition," said Darren.

"A huge part of that is having an efficient race and development team that can travel to the track without fuss or bother and get stuck into the testing so we can relay results back to our engineers back at Clayton.

"Certainly our new UD makes it easier and simpler to ensure we have a comfortable and trouble free run and without damaging our precious cargo in the back, we simply can't afford to have the karts bouncing around too much.

"I can't praise the ride quality highly enough, it is so smooth that despite one of our guys leaving an open can of soft drink at a recent test session we found the drink hadn't even spilt when we got back to the workshops, it was remarkable."
